Oberdorfer 974.3 Impeller – OEM Pump Replacement Part
Impellers wear, and a worn impeller is a quiet fault: the pump still turns, still sounds normal and still moves water, just less of it every month. The Oberdorfer 974.3 is the factory replacement.
In a self-priming centrifugal the impeller is not in contact with other pump parts, so it does not wear the way a positive displacement element does. What it suffers instead is erosion at the vane tips, cavitation damage, and corrosion in seawater, all of which round off the profile that generates head.
Note the direction of rotation and the orientation of the impeller as it comes off. Fitting one backwards is an easy mistake that costs most of the pump output.

Q: How do I know the impeller is the problem and not the intake?
Check the strainer and suction line first. If the suction is clear and output is still down at normal speed, the impeller or its clearance is the likely cause.
Q: Should a wear plate be renewed at the same time?
Where the pump uses one, yes. Clearance is what makes the impeller effective, and a new impeller against a grooved plate gives back only part of the lost flow.
Q: Does it matter which way the pump turns?
Very much. Confirm rotation against the pump marking before start-up, especially after a motor has been changed.
Q: Is it worth keeping a spare aboard?
For any pump on a critical circuit, yes. An impeller is small, stores well and is not something you want to be sourcing away from the dock.
