Oberdorfer 917801 Shaft Seal – OEM Pump Replacement Part
A pump seal has the hardest job of any part in the assembly: it has to hold pressure against a shaft that is turning. The Oberdorfer 917801 is the factory part for that duty, sized to the shaft and the housing bore it was designed around.
Grit is the other killer. Sand and scale drawn in through a raw water intake lap the seal faces until they no longer mate, so a pump on an unstrained intake will go through seals faster than the same pump behind a good strainer.
Handle the sealing faces carefully and keep them clean and dry on assembly. A fingerprint on a lapped face is enough to start a leak path. Check the shaft for scoring where the old seal ran before fitting a new one.

Q: Should the bearing be replaced at the same time?
If the seal has been leaking for a while, inspect the bearing closely. Fluid that has reached it usually means it is on borrowed time.
Q: What makes a new seal leak straight away?
Almost always a cocked installation, a scored shaft, or a face that was contaminated during assembly. Check all three before blaming the part.
Q: Can the pump be run briefly without liquid?
No. Dry running destroys seal faces in seconds, and it is the fastest way to ruin a freshly rebuilt pump.
Q: Does the pumped fluid change which seal I need?
Yes. The elastomer grade has to be compatible with the fluid and its temperature, so confirm the grade against what the pump actually handles.
