Oberdorfer 9176 Shaft Seal – OEM Pump Replacement Part
The Oberdorfer 9176 is the shaft seal that keeps pumped fluid inside the pump and out of the bearing housing. Oberdorfer offers packing, lip and mechanical dynamic seals across its range, and the seal is the part that decides how long a pump can run before it starts marking the deck underneath it.
Watch for drips at the bracket, salt crust or residue tracking down from the shaft area, and any sign of pumped fluid in the bearing. Each of those means the seal has stopped doing its job, and each of them ends with a seized bearing if it is ignored long enough.
Elastomer grade has to suit the fluid and the temperature. Buna-N covers water and general marine duty, EPDM suits hot water and glycol, Viton handles heat and aggressive media.

Q: Should the bearing be replaced at the same time?
If the seal has been leaking for a while, inspect the bearing closely. Fluid that has reached it usually means it is on borrowed time.
Q: What makes a new seal leak straight away?
Almost always a cocked installation, a scored shaft, or a face that was contaminated during assembly. Check all three before blaming the part.
Q: Can the pump be run briefly without liquid?
No. Dry running destroys seal faces in seconds, and it is the fastest way to ruin a freshly rebuilt pump.
Q: Does the pumped fluid change which seal I need?
Yes. The elastomer grade has to be compatible with the fluid and its temperature, so confirm the grade against what the pump actually handles.
