Oberdorfer 8397 Shaft Packing – Stainless Steel Replacement Part
This is the genuine Oberdorfer 8397 packing. Unlike a mechanical seal, packing is meant to weep slightly in service, and that small flow is what lubricates and cools the shaft where it passes through the box.
When the gland has no adjustment left, or when the drip cannot be controlled at any setting, the packing is finished and the shaft should be checked for a worn track before new material goes in.
Remove every ring of the old packing rather than topping up on top of it, and stagger the joints of the new rings around the box rather than lining them up.

Q: How much should the gland drip?
A few drops a minute with the pump running. A completely dry gland is running too tight and will score the shaft.
Q: How many rings does the box take?
That depends on the pump and the depth of the box. Count the rings that come out before they go in the bin.
Q: Can new packing be added on top of old?
It is a false economy. The old material is already consolidated and will keep the new rings from sealing.
Q: Why does new packing keep needing adjustment?
It consolidates as it beds in. Expect two or three small adjustments in the first hours and then long stability.
