Oberdorfer 5642 Gasket – OEM Pump Replacement Part
The Oberdorfer 5642 is a pump gasket. It seals a fixed joint between two machined faces and compensates for the small irregularities that stop metal sealing against metal on its own.
Gasket thickness is not arbitrary. On pump joints it often sets a running clearance as well as sealing, so fitting a thicker or thinner substitute can change how the pump performs even if the joint stays dry.
Renew the gasket every time the joint is opened. It costs very little compared with taking the pump apart twice.

Q: Can I cut my own from sheet material?
You can, but matching the thickness and the material grade matters more than matching the outline, and on joints that set a clearance it is not worth the risk.
Q: Does it need sealant as well?
Normally no. A clean face and even torque is what makes the joint, and sealant mostly makes the next disassembly harder.
Q: Why does the joint weep after retorquing?
Once a gasket has taken its set, retorquing rarely recovers it. The fix is a new gasket on clean faces.
Q: How should spares be stored?
Flat, dry and away from heat. A gasket that has creased or curled in storage will not seat evenly.
