Oberdorfer 2318 Bearing – Carbon Replacement Part
The Oberdorfer 2318 is a pump bearing in carbon. It carries the radial and thrust loads the pumping element generates and holds the shaft on centre, which is what allows the seal and the running clearances to work.
The symptoms worth acting on are a rumble or growl that rises with speed, heat at the bearing housing, and any play felt at the shaft with the pump stopped. Any of those means the pump should come out before it takes the shaft with it.
Replace the seal at the same time. It is the part most likely to have caused the failure and it is cheap to renew while the pump is open.

Q: Why did the bearing fail so soon after a rebuild?
Check the seal and the alignment. A leaking seal or a misaligned coupling will take out a new bearing quickly.
Q: Is a noisy bearing urgent?
Treat it as urgent. Once a bearing is audible it is already damaged, and continuing to run it risks the shaft and the housing.
Q: Does this bearing need greasing?
It depends on the pump. Carbon bearings in this range are self lubricating; bronze bearings with a fitting are on a grease schedule.
Q: Can I fit it without a press?
It is better not to. Driving a bearing on with impact loads the rolling elements and shortens its life before it has turned once.
