Oberdorfer 1950.01 Shaft – Stainless Steel Replacement Part
A shaft looks like a part that never needs replacing, and most of the time it is. What sends one to the scrap bin is a groove worn where the seal rode, corrosion under a bearing, or a bend picked up from a coupling that was never properly aligned. The Oberdorfer 1950.01 is the factory replacement.
The seal track is the area to inspect. A ridge you can feel with a fingernail where the old seal ran will cut a new seal open in short order, and no amount of care during assembly will get around it.
Check the key, the keyway and the coupling fit while the shaft is out, and confirm alignment on reassembly so the new shaft does not go the same way as the old one.

Q: Can a grooved shaft be built up and reused?
It can be done, but on a pump this size the cost of the work rarely beats the cost of a new shaft, and the repair has to be ground true afterwards.
Q: What causes a shaft to wear in the first place?
Abrasives in the pumped fluid working under the seal, dry running, and misalignment that loads one side of the seal harder than the other.
Q: Does alignment need checking after fitting?
Yes, on any pedestal or coupled installation. Misalignment is the fastest way to ruin the new shaft and the bearing with it.
Q: Should the bearing be replaced too?
If the shaft failed from corrosion or the bearing has run on a pitted seat, replace both. They will not last individually.
