Oberdorfer 109MB-10J36BJ-50/60-316SS Bronze Close-Coupled Centrifugal Pump — 1/2 HP, 80 GPM Max, 316 Stainless Steel Shaft, 115/230V 50/60Hz

The Oberdorfer 109MB-10J36BJ-50/60-316SS is a well-built bronze close-coupled centrifugal pump designed for reliable, quiet, and efficient fluid transfer in industrial, commercial, and fluid systems applications. The pump body and impeller are bronze construction, the shaft is 316 passivated stainless steel, and the seal is Buna mechanical type — all close-coupled to a 1/2 horsepower, 3450 RPM, 115/230-volt, single-phase ODP motor rated for 50/60 Hz operation. Port connections are a 1-1/4" NPT inlet and 1" NPT outlet, with a maximum flow of 80 GPM and maximum pressure of 19 PSI at 45 feet of head. The Teflon barrier seal shields motor bearings from fluid intrusion, and the carbon face mechanical seal provides positive, leak-resistant shaft sealing rated to 212°F and 75 PSI.

The centrifugal design uses a single rotating metal impeller — liquid enters at the center and is thrown outward radially by centrifugal force, with the impeller never contacting other pump parts, resulting in quiet and efficient pumping action. Because the flow produced is non-positive, the discharge line can be shut off completely without risk of overloading the motor or bursting lines, eliminating the need for a pressure relief valve. The special alloys used throughout provide corrosion resistance to water, water solutions, and a broad range of commercial chemicals, and the pump can handle viscous liquids up to 2000 Saybolt Seconds Universal as well as fluids contaminated with small solids or mild abrasives — making it a versatile performer for water, light oils, and many industrial process fluids.

Key Features

  • Bronze pump body and bronze impeller close-coupled to a 1/2 HP, 3450 RPM, 115/230V single-phase ODP motor rated for 50/60 Hz
  • 316 passivated stainless steel shaft sleeve for superior corrosion resistance
  • Teflon barrier seal protects motor bearings; carbon face mechanical pump seals standard
  • Shaft seal options: Buna (standard), Viton, and PTFE/Chemlon for aggressive solvents, difficult chemicals, and elevated temperatures
  • Pump heads mount to standard footed NEMA 56J jet pump motors; a wide variety of compatible motors are available
  • Single-phase motor is nonreversible and wired for correct counter-clockwise pump rotation when viewed at the inlet end
  • Available in three-phase, 50 Hz, TEFC, IEEE-45, and other custom motor configurations
  • Non-positive flow design allows full discharge shutoff with no motor overload or burst risk — no relief valve required
  • Handles viscous liquids up to 2000 Saybolt Seconds Universal (SSU)
  • Fluid temperature limit: 212°F (100°C); maximum seal pressure: 75 PSI
  • Direct replacement for Cruisair P3000BXT and Dometic part number 225500272 / PH3000BXT

Applications

  • Chemical recirculation and chemical transfer systems, bicarbonate systems, de-ionized water systems, scrubber systems, and detergent mixers
  • Industrial fluid transfer involving water, light oils, mild solvents, and moderately contaminated process liquids
  • Commercial HVAC fluid circulation and cooling water systems
  • General close-coupled pump replacement applications requiring a NEMA 56J motor interface
  • Aquaculture, pool and spa circulation, and light water treatment support systems
  • Direct OEM replacement for Cruisair and Dometic climate-control pump systems

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What fluid types can the 109MB-10J36BJ-50/60-316SS pump safely handle?

Beyond water, this pump is rated for light oils, mild solvents, water solutions, and a wide range of commercial chemicals. It also handles viscous fluids up to 2000 SSU and liquids containing minor solids or mild abrasives, though abrasive fluids will shorten mechanical seal service life.

Q: Can this pump operate on international 50 Hz power supplies?

Yes. The motor is dual-rated for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz at 115/230V single phase, making it suitable for use in North American and many international electrical systems without modification.

Q: Is flooded suction required, or can the pump self-prime?

Flooded suction is standard for this pump. However, if a leak-free foot valve is installed at the suction line inlet and all air is manually bled from the pump before startup, it can lift fluid on the suction side up to approximately 15 feet.

Q: Why does this model carry the 316SS designation in its part number?

The 316SS suffix indicates the pump is fitted with a 316 passivated stainless steel shaft sleeve rather than the standard 416 stainless steel shaft, providing meaningfully better corrosion and oxidation resistance in demanding fluid environments.

Q: What happens if I fully close the discharge line while the pump is running?

Because this is a non-positive displacement centrifugal design, closing the discharge line completely will not overload the motor or burst any lines. Flow simply drops to zero and pressure stabilizes — no relief valve is required.

Q: Are alternative motor configurations available beyond the standard single-phase ODP?

Yes. Additional configurations are available in three-phase, 50 Hz, TEFC, IEEE-45, and other custom motor modifications to suit specific installation and enclosure requirements.

Q: What seal upgrades are available if my fluid is incompatible with the standard Buna element?

Viton seals and PTFE (Chemlon) Teflon seals are available for severe solvents, difficult chemicals, and elevated-temperature applications where the standard Buna nitrile element is not rated.

Q: Does this pump require a pressure relief valve in the discharge line?

No. The centrifugal non-positive flow design naturally prevents over-pressurization, so a separate relief valve is not needed in the system.
