Oberdorfer 1009.73 O-ring – Viton Replacement Part
The 1009.73 is a genuine Oberdorfer sealing ring in Viton (fluoroelastomer). Sealing rings are consumable by design: they are meant to be replaced whenever the joint they seal is opened, and they cost a fraction of the time spent chasing a weep that turns out to be a flattened ring.
Elastomer choice is the part worth getting right. Buna-N suits water, most oils and general marine duty. EPDM handles hot water, glycol and many chemicals but is not happy in petroleum oils. Viton takes heat and aggressive media that would destroy the other two. Fitting the wrong compound looks fine on the bench and fails in service.
Confirm the size against the groove rather than against the old ring, which may have swelled or shrunk. A ring that has to be stretched hard to seat is the wrong ring.

Q: Can I substitute a hardware store O-ring of the same diameter?
Diameter alone does not define the seal. Cross section and compound both matter, and a generic ring in the wrong compound is the usual cause of a repeat leak.
Q: How many does a pump take?
That depends on the model and which joints are being opened. Check your pump parts breakdown, and order a spare while you are at it.
Q: Does it need lubricating on assembly?
A light film of a compatible fluid helps it seat without rolling. Avoid petroleum grease on EPDM.
Q: Is there a shelf life?
Elastomers harden with age. Stored cool, dark and uncompressed they last for years, but a ring that has gone stiff should not be fitted.
