Oberdorfer 1009.72 O-ring – EPDM Replacement Part
An O-ring is the smallest part in a pump and one of the few that can stop it working entirely. The Oberdorfer 1009.72 is moulded in EPDM and seals a static joint by being squeezed into a groove, so the fit of the groove and the condition of the ring are the whole of the seal.
Because it is a static seal it does not wear in the way a shaft seal does. It ages. Heat cycles, UV, ozone and time all harden the rubber until it no longer springs back into the groove, which is why a ring that has never leaked can start leaking after a lay-up.
Fit it dry or lightly lubricated with a fluid the compound tolerates, make sure the groove is clean, and do not roll or twist the ring into place. Replace it any time the joint is opened.

Q: Can I substitute a hardware store O-ring of the same diameter?
Diameter alone does not define the seal. Cross section and compound both matter, and a generic ring in the wrong compound is the usual cause of a repeat leak.
Q: How many does a pump take?
That depends on the model and which joints are being opened. Check your pump parts breakdown, and order a spare while you are at it.
Q: Does it need lubricating on assembly?
A light film of a compatible fluid helps it seat without rolling. Avoid petroleum grease on EPDM.
Q: Is there a shelf life?
Elastomers harden with age. Stored cool, dark and uncompressed they last for years, but a ring that has gone stiff should not be fitted.
