Oberdorfer 1009.71 O-ring – Buna-n Replacement Part
This is the Oberdorfer 1009.71 O-ring in Buna-N (nitrile). Oberdorfer uses static cover O-ring seals in place of cut gaskets on much of its pump range, which removes the gasket-crush variable from an assembly and lets a cover be taken off and put back without a scraper.
O-rings fail by taking a compression set, by hardening with heat and age, or by swelling when they meet a fluid the compound does not like. All three produce the same symptom, which is a joint that weeps under pressure, so the compound has to match both the fluid and the temperature it will see.
Keep spares out of sunlight and away from heat. Rubber ages on the shelf as well as in service, so rotate stock rather than keeping one ring for a decade.

Q: Can I substitute a hardware store O-ring of the same diameter?
Diameter alone does not define the seal. Cross section and compound both matter, and a generic ring in the wrong compound is the usual cause of a repeat leak.

Q: Does it need lubricating on assembly?
A light film of a compatible fluid helps it seat without rolling. Avoid petroleum grease on EPDM.
