Neoprene is the standard impeller compound for engine cooling and fresh or salt water transfer, with a working range of 45 to 180 F. Impellers should be replaced at least once a year, or sooner on hard-working engines, and a spare should always be carried aboard. After installation the pump needs up to 30 seconds to prime, so make sure water reaches it quickly.

Q: Can neoprene handle some oil in the water?
Neoprene tolerates only small amounts of oil or diesel. For pumps that regularly see oily bilge water, a nitrile impeller is the better choice.
Q: How long should a new impeller last?
With correct installation and no dry running it can last several seasons, but replacing it yearly is the safer preventive approach.
Q: What happens if the pump runs dry?
The blades overheat within seconds and can crack or melt. Never run the pump dry for more than about 30 seconds.
Q: Does blade direction matter at installation?
Yes. Bend the blades so they trail the direction of rotation, matching how the old impeller sat in the pump.
