The Jabsco 17981-0005 is a genuine Jabsco flexible impeller with a food grade neoprene impeller. It has 10 blades, a 2-9/16 in diameter and a 2 in width, with a 5/8 in double flat shaft, brass insert. As it turns inside the offset pump body, the blades bend and straighten, drawing liquid in and pushing it out, which is what makes a flexible impeller pump self-priming. Jabsco uses this impeller on specific pump models only, so match the part number against the parts list for the model on your pump plate before ordering.
Food grade neoprene is the sanitary compound used where the pump handles food, beverage and dairy products. Impellers are wear parts. Replace one when blades are cracked, torn or have taken a permanent set in the curved position, when the pump is slow to prime, or after it has run dry even briefly. Lubricate the new impeller with a little water pump grease before fitting it, and fit a new end cover gasket or O-ring at the same time.
