Jabsco 1040-0001 FKM Lip Seal
The Jabsco 1040-0001 is a genuine replacement shaft lip seal with a FKM fluoroelastomer sealing lip in a metal case. It is pressed into the seal bore of the pump body and its lip runs on the shaft, keeping the liquid being pumped from following the shaft out toward the motor or bearings. It is listed for Jabsco 12290 series self-priming pumps, where it is the optional seal in place of the standard nitrile seal.
FKM is chosen where the standard nitrile lip would swell or harden, such as with many fuels, oils and aggressive chemicals, and it tolerates higher temperatures. Lip seals wear with running hours, and a seal that has run dry or been exposed to grit weeps along the shaft. Replace the seal whenever it drips, and check the shaft where the lip runs, because a grooved shaft will wear a new seal out quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should the shaft be replaced with the seal?
Only if the lip has worn a groove into it. Run a fingernail across the seal track, and if it catches, replace the shaft too.
Q: Which way does the lip face?
Press the seal into the bore with the lip facing toward the impeller bore, and put a little grease on the back of the lip before the shaft goes through.
Q: Why did my seal fail so quickly?
Running the pump dry is the usual cause. The seal and impeller both rely on the liquid being pumped for lubrication.
Q: Can I fit the seal without special tools?
Yes, with care. Press it in squarely with a socket or piece of tube that bears on the metal case, never on the rubber lip.
