Finish Thompson 106299 EPDM Housing O-Ring, DB6 through DB10
The 106299 is the EPDM housing O-ring option for Finish Thompson DB6, DB6H, DB7, DB8, DB9 and DB10 sealless magnetic drive centrifugal pumps. It occupies the same groove as the standard fluoroelastomer ring and performs the same job of sealing the pump housing against the barrier assembly, but in a different rubber chosen for a different set of chemicals. EPDM is the material to specify when the pump handles strong caustics, amines, ketones, alcohols or hot water, all of which attack fluoroelastomers and will swell or soften a standard ring surprisingly quickly.
Match the ring to the fluid rather than to habit, because an O-ring is the cheapest part in the pump and the one most likely to put it out of service. A swollen, spongy or chalky ring is telling you the elastomer is wrong for the duty, not simply that it is worn, and fitting the same material again repeats the failure. EPDM does have one well known limitation worth remembering: it is not suited to petroleum oils, greases or most hydrocarbon solvents, so a pump that changes duty may need to change back to the standard ring. Renew the ring whenever the wet end is opened and seat it evenly before drawing down the clamp ring.

Q: Which fluids rule EPDM out?
Petroleum oils, greases, diesel and most aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents, where the ring will swell and lose its sealing load.
Q: Does changing to EPDM alter the pump pressure rating?
No. The rating comes from the housing and clamp ring, and the DB6 through DB10 sizes are rated to 80 psi with an O-ring sealed housing.
Q: Should the barrier O-ring be changed to EPDM as well?
If the fluid is the reason for the change then yes, every elastomer in the wet end sees the same chemical and should be reviewed together.
Q: How should the ring be stored before use?
Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from ozone sources such as electric motors, since both age rubber long before it ever reaches the pump.
