Finish Thompson 106298 Viton Housing O-Ring, DB6 through DB10
The 106298 is the standard Viton housing O-ring for Finish Thompson DB6, DB6H, DB7, DB8, DB9 and DB10 sealless magnetic drive centrifugal pumps. It sits between the pump housing and the barrier assembly and is the single gasket holding the wet end closed, so every drop of pressure the pump develops is contained by this one ring. Viton, the FKM fluoroelastomer, is the factory standard because it tolerates a broad span of acids, hydrocarbons and oxidizers while staying elastic at the elevated temperatures these pumps are often asked to run at.
O-rings are consumable and should be renewed every time the housing is separated, even when the old ring looks serviceable, because a compression set that is invisible to the eye is enough to let a hairline weep start. Replace immediately if the ring shows flat spots, splits, swelling, chalking or a sticky surface, since swelling and softening usually mean the elastomer is not compatible with what is being pumped and an EPDM or perfluoroelastomer ring may be the better choice. Fit it dry or with a lubricant known to suit the chemical, seat it squarely in its groove, and draw the clamp ring down evenly so the ring is not pinched on one side.

Q: How does Viton compare with the EPDM option?
They cover different chemistries rather than different quality levels, and EPDM is generally chosen for strong caustics, ketones and hot water where Viton is attacked.
Q: Is the housing O-ring the same as the barrier O-ring?
No. They are separate rings in separate grooves with different part numbers, and a rebuild normally renews both at the same time.
Q: Can the ring be reused if the pump was only opened to look inside?
It is not worth the risk. The ring has already taken a set against the groove and will not reseat with the same load once it has been disturbed.
Q: What temperature limit applies?
The pump housing material sets the ceiling, with polypropylene bodies rated to 180 degrees F and PVDF bodies to 220 degrees F, and the chemical being pumped can lower both.
