Finish Thompson 106283-2 Drive Magnet Assembly, 10 Pole, 56C Frame
The 106283-2 is the outer drive magnet assembly for Finish Thompson DB series sealless magnetic drive centrifugal pumps in the DB6, DB6H, DB7, DB8, DB9 and DB10 sizes, built with a ten pole magnet ring for a NEMA 56C motor frame. It mounts on the motor shaft behind the motor adapter and drives the impeller magnet through the containment barrier, which is what lets these pumps handle corrosive duty with no dynamic seal anywhere in the fluid path. The assembly is supplied with its retaining ring, and the 56C version also carries the stainless set screws that clamp it to the shaft.
A ten pole coupling is the strongest of the three ratings offered on this pump size and is normally specified where the duty point, the specific gravity of the fluid, or the viscosity demands more torque than a six or eight pole ring can hold. Q: Can a ten pole ring be fitted to a pump that came with six or eight poles?
Only as a matched pair. The impeller magnet inside the wet end has to carry the same pole count, so the two are changed together or not at all.
Q: Does a stronger coupling protect the pump from running dry?
No. Dry running is limited by the bushing material rather than the magnets, and the carbon bushing option is what allows short dry periods.
Q: How is the retaining ring used?
It seats in the groove on the carrier and locates the assembly, so it is fitted before the motor adapter goes back on and should be replaced if it has lost tension.
Q: What is the usual sign of a weakened magnet set?
The pump runs quietly but will not reach its curve, and the motor draws noticeably less amperage than the nameplate figure for the duty.
