Port fittings are the interface between a pump and everything around it, and they are the part most often wrong on a pump that has been moved from one installation to another. A pump is rarely retired because it is worn out — far more often it is removed during a refit, or replaced with a different model, and then reinstalled elsewhere with whatever fittings happened to come with it. Q: Why do extra joints matter more on the inlet?
Because the inlet is under suction. A joint that is slightly imperfect there draws air rather than leaking water, so there is nothing visible to find and the pump simply will not prime.
Q: How many adapters is too many?
More than one per port is worth reconsidering. Each adds a seal, a small restriction and a little more leverage on the pump port.
Q: Does port size have to match the plumbing exactly?
The port has to match the pump, and the far end has to match the plumbing. Where those differ, one correctly chosen fitting is far better than two general-purpose ones.
Q: What should I check when reinstalling an older pump?
The port O-rings and any retaining clips, the mounting grommets, and the condition of the suction hose. Those three cover most of what goes wrong after a relocation.
