Rectifiers fail in two characteristic ways, and both are worth recognising. An open-circuit failure simply stops the pump — nothing happens when the power is applied, and the motor is usually blamed first. A short-circuit failure is more dramatic: it can pass AC through to the motor, trip the supply protection, or run the motor roughly with a distinct buzzing note. Q: How do I know it is the rectifier and not the motor?
If the supply is proven good at the pump and nothing happens at all, the rectifier is a strong candidate. A motor that turns roughly by hand or shows heavy brush wear points the other way.
