Flojet 20195-007 Diaphragm Kit, Buna / Nylon
The Flojet 20195-007 is the genuine diaphragm kit in Buna with nylon pistons. The diaphragm is the flexing membrane that moves the water, and the single component doing the most work in the whole pump.
Consider what it endures. On a pump running at a few thousand strokes a minute, the membrane flexes through its full travel millions of times a season, while sealing the wet side from the drive side on every one of those cycles. Nothing else in the pump is asked to do that. It is why the diaphragm is the defining service item, and why its material is chosen with more care than almost any other part.
Buna-N (nitrile) is the general-purpose choice and a very good one for fresh water, washdown, detergents and dilute solutions: resilient, quick to recover its shape, and more abrasion-resistant than most alternatives. Where it struggles is with sustained heat, ozone and aggressive chemistry, for which EPDM, Viton and Teflon options exist. The nylon pistons come with the kit because they clamp the membrane, and clamping it with worn, uneven pistons is a reliable way to shorten the life of a new diaphragm.

Q: How long should a diaphragm last?
It depends heavily on duty, temperature and how clean the water is. A well-treated pump in fresh water service can run for years; one working hot, hard or dirty will get through them far faster.
Q: Should the valves be replaced at the same time?
If the pump is apart and the valves have done the same hours, it is usually worth it. Both are wetted wear items and both are far easier to reach while the pump is open.
Q: Does Buna suit cold conditions?
It performs well across normal ambient and cold water ranges. It is heat rather than cold that shortens its life.
Q: What does a failed diaphragm look like?
Cracks radiating from the clamped centre, a split at the outer flex point, or a membrane that has gone hard and glazed rather than remaining supple.
