Flojet 20195-004 Diaphragm Kit, EPDM / Nylon
The Flojet 20195-004 is the genuine diaphragm kit in EPDM with nylon pistons. The diaphragm is the flexible membrane that does the actual pumping — the cam pulls it back to draw liquid in and pushes it forward to expel it, and everything else in the pump exists to support or direct that action.
It is also the component that separates the water from the machinery. A diaphragm that has failed does not simply stop pumping; it lets liquid through into the drive side of the pump, where it reaches the cam, the bearing and eventually the motor. That is why a weeping pump should be attended to promptly rather than tolerated — a diaphragm replaced in time is an inexpensive job, while one left until water has reached the motor is a considerably larger one.
EPDM is the compound for hot water and steam, alkalis and caustics, dilute acids and phosphate-ester fluids, with strong resistance to ozone and weathering. It swells badly in petroleum products, so it must be matched to the liquid. The nylon pistons clamp the diaphragm centre and transfer the cam’s motion into it; supplying them with the kit means the membrane is not clamped by worn pistons with uneven faces, which is a common way to shorten the life of a new diaphragm.
Key Features
- Genuine Flojet (Xylem) service part — diaphragm and pistons as a matched kit
- EPDM membrane for hot water, steam, alkalis, caustics and dilute acids
- Nylon pistons supplied with the kit, so the new diaphragm is clamped by flat faces
- Restores priming and keeps liquid out of the drive side of the pump
- Not suitable for petroleum products — EPDM swells in oil, diesel and petrol
Applications
- Flojet diaphragm pump rebuild and overhaul
- Hot water and heated circuit service
- Caustic, alkali and dilute acid transfer
- Repairing a pump that is weeping or has lost its prime
- Marine, RV, dockside and industrial water systems

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the signs of a failing diaphragm?
Loss of priming, water appearing around the pump body or in the drive area, and a pump that runs normally but delivers little or nothing.
Q: Why do the pistons come with the diaphragm?
Because they clamp it. Worn pistons with uneven faces concentrate the clamping load on part of the membrane, which is where a new diaphragm will tear first.
Q: How urgent is a weeping diaphragm?
More urgent than it looks. Once liquid is passing the membrane it is heading for the cam, the bearing and the motor, and those repairs cost far more than a diaphragm.
Q: Can a diaphragm be damaged by running dry?
Less than the valves and seals are, but repeated dry running heats the membrane and hardens it over time, shortening its life.
