Flojet 20097-000 Brush Kit, Carbon, 115 Volt
The Flojet 20097-000 is the genuine carbon motor brush kit for 115 volt Flojet pumps. Brushes are the sprung carbon blocks that carry current into the spinning commutator, and they are the only part of a brushed motor that is designed to wear away in normal use.
That makes them the first thing to check on a motor that has stopped or become unreliable, and the cheapest thing to fix. The failure pattern is consistent: the pump becomes reluctant to start, then starts only after a tap on the casing, then eventually does not start at all. Along the way it may run intermittently, spark visibly through the ventilation slots, or produce a burning smell. All of that is normally worn brushes rather than a dead motor, and replacing them at that point saves the motor.
Leave it too long and the economics change. A brush worn down to its spring lets the spring itself bear on the commutator, which cuts grooves into the copper segments in short order. Once the commutator is scored, new brushes will not bed in properly and the motor is effectively finished. Check brush length whenever the motor is accessible, and replace them well before they reach their wear limit.
Key Features
- Genuine Flojet (Xylem) service part — correct grade, size and spring tension
- Carbon brushes for 115 volt motors
- The designed wear item — cheapest and most likely cause of a motor that will not start
- Replacing in time protects the commutator from being cut by the brush spring
- Supplied as a kit so both brushes are renewed together
Applications
- Flojet 115 volt pump motors
- Repairing a pump that is reluctant to start or runs intermittently
- Routine motor maintenance before the commutator is damaged
- Restoring a pump rather than replacing the motor
- Marine, dockside and shoreside mains-powered water systems

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know when brushes need changing?
Measure them against the wear limit in the pump documentation. As a rough guide, a brush worn to about a third of its original length is well past due.
Q: Why do brushes have to match the voltage?
Because the grade and the spring tension are matched to the current the motor draws and the commutator speed. A brush from a different motor wears fast and can damage the commutator.
Q: What does sparking at the brushes mean?
A little is normal. Heavy or continuous sparking points to worn brushes, a dirty or scored commutator, or a motor being asked to work harder than it should.
Q: Should both brushes be changed together?
Always. Two brushes of different lengths and bedding wear unevenly and load the commutator asymmetrically, which shortens the life of everything involved.
