Q: How do I check the cam bearing without dismantling the pump?
With the power isolated, turn the motor shaft by hand. A sound bearing feels smooth and even; a worn one feels notchy, gritty or has perceptible play.
Q: Is bearing noise always the cam bearing?
Not always — the motor has its own bearings too. Cam bearing noise usually comes from the pump body and changes with load, while motor bearing noise stays with the motor even when the pump is unloaded.
Q: Should the diaphragm be replaced at the same time?
If the bearing has been noisy for a while, yes. A wobbling cam works the diaphragm unevenly, and the damage will not be obvious until the new bearing exposes it.
Q: Does the cam need lubricating on assembly?
