Flojet 01890000C Tube Cutter, 3/8" to 1/2"
The Flojet 01890000C is the genuine tube cutter for 3/8" and 1/2" plastic tubing. It is the tool that makes the square, clean, burr-free cut a push-fit joint depends on.
This is not an optional refinement. Every quick-connect fitting seals by sliding the tube past a grip ring and onto an O-ring, and both of those components are unforgiving about what the tube end looks like. A cut made at an angle seats the tube crooked, so the O-ring is compressed unevenly around its circumference. A cut with a burr or a squashed edge drags across the O-ring on the way in and can nick it, which produces a joint that holds on the bench and weeps under vibration a fortnight later. Almost every mysterious push-fit leak traces back to how the tube was cut.
A proper tube cutter shears the tubing cleanly in a single action without crushing it, which a hacksaw, a knife or side cutters cannot do. Keep the blade sharp, support the tube while cutting so it does not deform, and take a moment to check the cut end is genuinely square before inserting it. Replacement blades are available separately, so the tool need not be discarded when the edge dulls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I not just use a sharp knife?
You can cut the tube, but rarely square. A knife tends to run round the tube and leave a slight spiral and a raised edge, both of which are exactly what the O-ring objects to.
Q: What about a small pipe slice or rotary cutter?
Rotary cutters work on metal by deforming it, and on plastic tubing they tend to leave a raised lip and a slightly belled end. A shearing cutter is the right tool here.
Q: How do I know when the blade needs replacing?
When the cut stops being clean — a dull blade leaves a ragged edge, pushes rather than shears, and starts to squash the tube ahead of the cut.
Q: Does the cutter work on metric tube?
It is sized for 3/8" and 1/2" tubing. Metric tube of a similar diameter may fit the jaws, but check it is genuinely supported and cut square rather than assuming.
