Flojet 01740-014 Inlet Strainer, 1/2" Quest x Quad Port
The Flojet 01740-014 is the genuine inlet strainer with a 1/2" Quest connection on one side and a Quad-Port snap-in on the other. It is the version for systems plumbed in semi-rigid tubing rather than flexible hose.
Quest-style tubing systems are common in permanently installed fresh water plumbing because they are neat, they do not sag between supports, and they do not develop the slow kinks that flexible hose acquires over years in a locker. What they do not do is flex to accommodate a fitting that is pointing the wrong way, which is why having the strainer and the inlet connection combined in one moulded part matters more here than it does on a hose system — there is no give in the pipework to absorb an extra joint or an awkward angle.
The Quad-Port end snaps into the pump housing, sealed by an O-ring and retained by a clip, so the strainer comes out by hand for cleaning without disturbing the tubing run at all. That is the real advantage of this arrangement: on a rigid plumbing system, being able to service the screen without cutting or unmaking a pipe joint is worth a great deal. Clean the screen when flow falls off and replace the unit if the mesh is torn or the body cracked.

Q: What is the difference between Quest tubing and ordinary hose?
Quest is semi-rigid tubing joined with mechanical fittings rather than barbs and clamps. It holds its shape, runs neatly and resists the gradual kinking that flexible hose suffers in confined spaces.
Q: Can I adapt this to flexible hose?
You would need a Quest-to-barb adapter, which adds a joint on the suction side. If the system is hose throughout, the barbed version of this strainer is the cleaner answer.
Q: Does rigid tubing transmit more pump noise?
It can carry vibration into the structure more readily than hose. A short flexible section between the pump and the rigid run, plus soft mounts under the pump, makes a noticeable difference.
Q: How tight should the Quest connection be?
Firm by hand and then the amount specified for the fitting type — no more. Over-tightening a compression-style connection distorts the ferrule and creates the very leak you were trying to avoid.
