Flojet 01740-012S Inlet Strainer, 1/2" Barb x Quad Port
The Flojet 01740-012S is the genuine inlet strainer with a 1/2" hose barb on one side and a Quad-Port snap-in connection on the other, fitted with a stainless steel screen. It mounts directly onto the pump inlet, so straining and connecting happen in one component.
Half-inch hose and a snap-in port is the most common combination on marine and mobile water systems, which makes this one of the parts most likely to be on a pump already. That also makes it one of the most commonly neglected. The screen is inside the pump’s inlet fitting rather than out in the hose run where you can see it, so it is easy to forget it exists — and a strainer nobody remembers is a strainer nobody cleans. A great many ‘tired’ pumps turn out to have a screen packed solid with tank sediment.
The good news is that it takes seconds to check. Pull the retaining clip, slide the port out of the pump housing by hand, rinse the screen and put it back. No tools, no thread sealant, no draining the system beyond what is in the hose. Inspect the O-ring while it is out, and replace the unit if the mesh is torn or the body cracked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to drain the tank to clean it?
No. Isolate or lift the suction hose above the water line if you can, and have a cloth ready — you will only lose what is standing in the fitting and the hose.
Q: How do I get the clip out without breaking it?
Ease it straight out with a small flat screwdriver rather than levering it sideways. The clips are inexpensive and worth keeping spares of, because a distorted one will not hold the port securely.
Q: My pump is noisy but the screen looks clean. What else?
Check the hose itself for a collapsed section, and the tank pickup for a blocked or silted fitting. Anything that restricts the inlet produces the same noise, and the screen is only one of the candidates.
Q: Can I leave the strainer out to improve flow?
It would gain very little and cost a great deal. The restriction from a clean screen is small; the cost of a single grain of grit on a check valve seat is a pump that will not hold pressure.
