The Flojet 01740-003S is the genuine inline strainer with 3/8" hose barbs on both ends and a stainless steel screen. It fits into a 3/8" suction line and keeps grit, scale and sediment away from the pump’s check valves.
Small-bore systems are where a strainer earns its keep fastest, because the components downstream are proportionally more delicate. The check valves in a compact diaphragm pump have small, lightly sprung sealing faces, and the particle needed to hold one open is correspondingly small. At the same time the system has the least tolerance for a restricted inlet, so the strainer has to do its job without becoming a restriction itself — which is why the screen grade matters and why regular cleaning is not optional.
The stainless screen holds its shape and aperture through repeated cleaning and through the chlorinated or mildly acidic water that turns up in real systems, where a plated mesh would eventually corrode and distort. Clamp both barbs, check the screen at the start of each season, and replace the unit if the mesh tears or the body is split by a freeze.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How small a particle will actually cause trouble?
Smaller than you would expect. A check valve seals elastomer against a machined seat, so anything that props that face up by even a few thousandths of an inch is enough to let water leak back on every stroke.
Q: Will the strainer stop the pump losing prime overnight?
It will if the cause is debris on a check valve seat, which is the most common reason. If the pump still bleeds down with a clean system, suspect an air leak on the suction side instead.
Q: Can I run two strainers in series?
There is rarely any benefit. A second screen of the same grade catches almost nothing extra and doubles the restriction. A single correctly sized strainer, cleaned regularly, does more.
Q: Does hot water affect it?
Keep it to the cold or ambient side of the system. Sustained hot water softens plastic strainer bodies and shortens the life of the seals at the joints.
