Flojet 01740-002 Inline Strainer, 1/2" Barb x 1/2" Barb
The Flojet 01740-002 is the genuine inline strainer with 1/2" hose barbs on both ends. It fits into a 1/2" suction hose run ahead of the pump and screens out the grit, scale and sediment that would otherwise reach the pump’s check valves.
Half-inch is the most common plumbing size on marine and mobile water systems, and it is also the minimum inlet hose most diaphragm pumps are specified for. That makes strainer maintenance on a 1/2" system worth a little more attention than it usually gets, because there is not much spare capacity in the line to absorb a partly blocked screen. A strainer that has quietly loaded up over a season will show itself as weaker taps, a pump that runs longer than it used to, and a rougher note from the pump as it starts to cavitate.
The symmetrical barb-to-barb design lets you site it wherever the hose run is accessible. Clamp both barbs, and mount it somewhere you can genuinely reach with a bowl underneath — a strainer that is awkward to open never gets cleaned. Replace the unit if the mesh tears or the body cracks, since a split body on the suction side draws air and stops the pump priming.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is 1/2 in. hose big enough for the suction side?
For most diaphragm pumps in this class it is the specified minimum, which means it is adequate but has no margin. If the run to the tank is long or has several bends, going up a size on the suction side is usually rewarded.
Q: Why does the pump run longer with a dirty strainer?
Because it is delivering less per stroke. The pump has to run for more seconds to satisfy the same tap and to reach its switch-off pressure, which also means more wear for the same amount of water.
Q: Can I clean it in place?
Not properly. The point of a removable screen is to get it out where you can see both faces and flush the debris away from the mesh rather than through it.
Q: Does it matter if the strainer sits above or below the tank?
It affects priming rather than straining. Mounted below the tank the strainer stays flooded and is easy to bleed; mounted above it, the pump has to lift through the screen, so keeping it clean matters more.
