Flojet 01720-023S Inlet Strainer, 3/8" Hose Barb
The Flojet 01720-023S is the genuine inlet strainer with a 3/8" hose barb connection and a stainless steel screen. It sits between the tank and the pump inlet, straining the water on its way in so that grit, scale and sediment never reach the pump’s check valves.
The 3/8" size puts this on the smaller systems — compact water pumps, beverage and dispensing installations, and tight plumbing runs where a bigger strainer simply will not fit. Small bore brings its own consideration: with less cross-sectional area to begin with, a partly blocked screen restricts flow proportionally faster than it would on a larger unit. On a small system a strainer that has not been cleaned in a year can be quietly costing you a noticeable share of your flow.
Clean the screen at the start of each season and any time output falls away. Replace the strainer if the mesh is torn or misshapen, or if the body has been split by a freeze — a cracked strainer body on the suction side lets air in, and a diaphragm pump will not hold prime against an air leak no matter how healthy the rest of it is.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does a small strainer need cleaning more often?
It is a matter of proportion. The same amount of debris blocks a larger percentage of a small screen, so the same water quality that a 3/4" strainer shrugs off will restrict a 3/8" one noticeably sooner.
Q: Can I fit a larger strainer and reduce the fitting size?
You can, and on a system that keeps blocking it is often the better answer. Just keep the reducer on the pump side of the strainer so the screen still sees the full bore.
Q: What does a blocked strainer sound like?
Usually a harsher, more rattly note from the pump, sometimes with a distinct gargling quality. That is cavitation — the pump trying to pull more water than the restricted inlet will supply.
Q: Is soaking the screen safe?
Warm water with a little detergent is fine, and a soak in dilute descaler will shift limescale. Avoid solvents and wire brushes, both of which can distort or enlarge the mesh apertures.
