Flojet 01720-002S Inline Strainer, 1/2" Hose Barb
The Flojet 01720-002S is the genuine inline strainer with 1/2" hose barb connections and a stainless steel screen. It plumbs into the suction hose ahead of the pump, with the barbed ends taking 1/2" hose on either side, and its job is to stop debris reaching the pump’s check valves.
The stainless screen is the part worth paying for. A plastic or plated mesh will eventually corrode, distort or shed its own fragments into the very water it is supposed to be cleaning, and a mesh that has partly collapsed lets particles straight past while still looking intact from the outside. Stainless holds its shape and its aperture through repeated cleaning, through freeze and thaw, and through the chlorinated or mildly acidic water that turns up in real systems.
Fitting it inline with hose barbs rather than threads has a practical advantage: you can put it wherever there is a convenient run of hose, and you can take it out for cleaning without disturbing any threaded joint or its sealant. Use a clamp at each barb rather than relying on friction. Clean the screen whenever flow falls off, and replace the unit if the screen tears or the body cracks — a split body draws air, and a diaphragm pump cannot prime against an air leak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need hose clamps on the barbs?
Yes. The barb holds the hose, but a clamp is what stops it creeping off under suction pulses and vibration. A hose that lifts slightly off a barb draws air without ever dripping water, which makes it an awkward fault to find.
Q: Does the strainer restrict flow?
A clean screen has a negligible effect. A dirty one is a different matter — a partly blocked screen is one of the most common causes of a pump that has gradually lost output over a season.
Q: Can it be fitted either way round?
Check for a flow arrow on the body and follow it if there is one. Fitting a strainer backwards puts the debris on the wrong side of the mesh, where flushing will not shift it.
Q: Will a stainless screen rust in salt water?
Stainless is far more resistant than plated mesh, but nothing is completely immune in constant salt service. Rinse the screen with fresh water when you clean it and it will last a great deal longer.
