Flojet 01600-006 Strainer
The Flojet 01600-006 is the genuine replacement inline strainer for Flojet pumps. It fits into the suction line ahead of the pump and catches grit, scale flakes, tank sediment, insect debris and the general small rubbish that collects in any water system before that material can reach the pump itself.
It is worth being clear about why that matters, because a strainer looks like an optional extra and is not. A diaphragm pump’s check valves seal by pressing a flexible elastomer face against a machined seat, and the gap involved is microscopic. A single grain of sand lodged on that seat holds the valve open, and a valve that cannot close means the pump pushes water backwards on half of every stroke. The symptoms are lost pressure, a pump that cycles on and off when no tap is open, or one that will not prime at all — and the cause is a particle you would struggle to see.
Strainers are maintenance items rather than fit-and-forget parts. Check the screen at the start of each season and after any work on the tank or plumbing, and clean it whenever flow starts to drop off. Replace the whole strainer if the screen is torn, distorted or has scale you cannot wash out, or if the body has been cracked by a freeze — a split strainer body lets air into the suction side, and a diaphragm pump will not prime against an air leak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which side of the pump does a strainer go on?
Always the suction side, between the tank and the pump inlet. Fitted on the discharge side it protects nothing, because anything harmful has already passed through the pump.
Q: How often should the screen be cleaned?
Check it at the start of each season and any time flow drops off. If you have recently drained, refilled or worked on the tank, check it sooner — disturbed sediment is the usual reason a screen blocks suddenly.
Q: Can a blocked strainer damage the pump?
It can. Starving a diaphragm pump of inlet flow makes it cavitate, which is noisy, hard on the diaphragm and check valves, and can pull the pump into a vacuum it was not designed to work against.
Q: Is it worth fitting one if the water looks clean?
Yes. Most of what damages a check valve is invisible in a glass of water — fine sand, scale flakes shed from tank walls and pipe debris left behind from installation work.
