Calpeda 16006010000 Mechanical Seal - Type 3 R, 12 mm Shaft

It seals the single point in a centrifugal pump where a rotating component crosses a pressure boundary: where the shaft leaves the wet end and passes into the lantern bracket on its way to the motor.
It does that with a pair of lapped faces held in contact by a spring. One face is stationary, seated in the seal housing on an elastomer; the other turns with the shaft and is pushed against it. Those faces are polished flat to a degree that is hard to picture, and in normal running they never touch metal to metal. They ride on a film of the pumped liquid only molecules thick, which both lubricates and carries away frictional heat. That film is the whole reason a mechanical seal cannot survive being run dry - remove the liquid and the faces overheat, craze and chip within seconds, which is why priming matters so much to seal life.
A failing seal gives you notice. Liquid appears at the drain in the lantern bracket, there is a brief squeal on start-up, or you find damp streaks below the joint. Act on it, because the water getting past a tired seal heads straight for the motor bearing. When fitting the replacement, keep the lapped faces spotless and handle both halves by their edges - a fingerprint on a seal face is a leak path. Lubricate the elastomer with clean water or soapy water, never oil or grease. And note the material code as well as the shaft size when ordering: the same 12 mm seal is offered in more than one material specification, and they are not interchangeable in every duty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which half goes in first?
The stationary seat goes into the housing first, polished side facing outward toward the impeller, and the rotating half then slides onto the shaft with its polished face meeting it. Assembled the other way round, both faces are ruined the moment the pump is started.
Q: Is a little weeping normal on a new seal?
A few drops in the first minutes while the faces bed in is common and should stop by itself. Anything that continues beyond that, or returns after a day of running, points to contamination, a chipped face or an assembly error rather than a seal that needs longer.
Q: Can I clean up and reuse one that has been taken apart?
No. Once the halves separate, the faces pick up dust and fingerprints on surfaces that need to be optically flat, and the two have already worn a matched pattern against each other. Mechanical seals are fit-once items.
Q: What is the quickest way to kill a new one?
Running the pump dry, even briefly. Closing a discharge valve for an extended period does much the same by letting the liquid in the casing heat up. Prime properly, and never let the pump churn against a closed system while you go and do something else.
