Calpeda 14003110000 Deflector - 17.7 x 33 x 3 mm
The Calpeda 14003110000 is the genuine deflector, sometimes called a water slinger, measuring 17.7 mm inside diameter by 33 mm outside diameter by 3 mm thick. It is a flexible ring that stretches onto the pump shaft in the open space of the lantern bracket, between the mechanical seal and the motor. It has no fasteners, no adjustment and nothing to wear, and it works on one principle: anything liquid that lands on it while it is turning is thrown outward and away.
On a close-coupled pump that matters more than most people realise. There is no separate bearing frame and no long shaft to put distance between the wet end and the drive - the pump is bolted directly to the motor, so the motor front bearing sits only a short span behind the shaft seal. Mechanical seals weep slightly as their faces wear, which is normal, and without a deflector that moisture simply tracks along the shaft into the bearing. Water and bearing grease do not coexist: the grease emulsifies, the film breaks down, and what began as a few drops a day turns into a noisy bearing and then a motor rewind or replacement.
Deflectors are easy to overlook precisely because they are so simple. They perish slowly, going hard and glazed with heat and age, splitting at the bore, or being softened by oil that has found its way into the bracket. Plenty go missing altogether during a rebuild and nobody notices for a season. Check yours whenever the pump is apart: it should be supple, grip the shaft tightly enough that you cannot spin it by hand, and sit where anything it throws off can drain out of the bracket rather than run back in. The 17.7 mm bore is undersized on purpose so the ring grips by stretch, which is why an approximately sized substitute tends to creep along the shaft and stop doing its job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does it need to be removed to change the mechanical seal?
It usually has to come off the shaft to give access, and that is the natural moment to replace it. Trying to work around it tends to mean stretching it over a seal or a shoulder it was never meant to pass, which is how a serviceable one gets split.
Q: My motor bearing is already noisy. Will fitting one fix it?
No. A bearing that has started to make noise has damaged surfaces and will not recover. Fit the deflector so the same cause does not destroy the replacement, and deal with the bearing separately.
Q: There is a slot or hole in the bracket below the shaft - should I block it?
Definitely not. That opening is the drain, and the deflector and the drain work as a pair. Block it and any leakage collects inside the bracket instead of leaving it, which defeats the whole arrangement.
Q: Can I refit the old one if it still looks intact?
Only if it is still soft and still grips. Roll it between your fingers - if the rubber feels hard, glazed or is showing fine cracks, it has lost the elasticity that keeps it locked to the shaft, and a ring that slips on the shaft slings nothing at all.
