The Calpeda 14002390000 is the genuine casing O-ring for larger-bore Calpeda pumps, measuring 196.4 mm inside diameter with a 3.53 mm cord and listed by Calpeda under O-ring reference 4775. The heavier 3.53 mm section is deliberate rather than incidental. As casing diameters grow, so do the machining tolerances and the amount the two faces can flex between widely spaced bolts, and a thicker cord has the compression range to absorb all of that and still seal. It is also more forgiving of a sealing face that has seen a few rebuilds. What it gives up in return is stiffness: a ring of this diameter is floppy, and it will happily sag out of its groove while you are lining the casing up. Trapped between the faces it gets pinched, nicked or cut, and the pump goes back together with a leak already built into it.
The trick is simply to hold it where it belongs. A twisted ring seals badly and often fails early even though it looks perfect once the pump is closed. After that, tighten the bolts progressively in a cross pattern rather than pulling one side home first, so the ring is compressed evenly all the way round.
