Calpeda 14002290000 Casing O-Ring - 117.1 x 1.78 mm
The Calpeda 14002290000 is the genuine casing O-ring, measuring 117.1 mm inside diameter with a 1.78 mm cord and carried by Calpeda under O-ring reference 2462. Calpeda seals the joint between the pump casing and the lantern bracket with a moulded ring seated in a machined groove rather than with a flat cut gasket. Draw the two halves together on their bolts and the ring is compressed into that groove, sealing continuously around the whole circumference of the wet end.
When it stops doing that it fails in two directions, and only one of them is visible. Outward, you get a weep or a drip at the casing joint. Inward, on the suction side, you get air being drawn into a pump that cannot move air, and the symptoms are a pump that takes an age to prime, surges while running, or loses its prime between uses. Nothing drips and nothing looks wrong, so the fault is routinely blamed on the shaft seal or the impeller while the real culprit is a flattened ring worth a fraction of either.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I measure the old one to check it matches?
Lay it flat without stretching it and measure across the inside of the ring, then measure the rubber itself with calipers for the cord. Bear in mind a ring that has been in service reads slightly flat on the cord, so treat the part number as the authority and the measurement as a sanity check.
Q: Could I cut a length of O-ring cord and glue it to size instead?
Spliced cord is a get-you-home bodge, not a repair. The glued joint is the weakest point of the ring and it sits in the one place that is being both compressed and pressurised. A moulded ring has no joint anywhere along it.
Q: The old one came out in pieces - how do I know I got it all?
Run a fingertip all the way round the groove and then wipe it with a clean rag. Hardened fragments left behind hold the new ring off its seat, and that is one of the most common reasons a joint still weeps after an otherwise careful rebuild.
Q: Does the rubber compound matter for what I am pumping?
Yes. It needs to match what the pump was built with, which for general water duty is normally nitrile. If you are moving anything other than clean or raw water, or the pump runs warm, tell us the fluid and the temperature before ordering.
