Burks 9911 Sleeve Gasket 1.25 in OD
The Burks 9911 is the genuine Burks sleeve gasket, 1.25 in outside diameter. A flat gasket of this kind crushes slightly as the joint is drawn together, flowing into the tooling marks on both faces so that neither liquid nor air can find a path through.
Age hardens the gasket material and the joint loses its seal. On a self-priming pump a hardened case gasket also lets air in, so the pump becomes slow to prime or loses prime between runs - a symptom that gets blamed on the foot valve far more often than on a few pence worth of gasket.
Both faces need to be genuinely clean before the new gasket goes on. Old material has to be scraped off without gouging the casting, and a scratch across the sealing land will leak no matter how good the gasket is.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should the bolts be retightened after the pump has run?
Check them once the pump has been up to temperature and cooled again. Gaskets relax slightly as they bed in, and a single even re-torque in a cross pattern often settles a joint that was weeping lightly.
Q: The joint still seeps with a new gasket. What now?
Put a straight edge across both faces. A casting that has been prised apart with a screwdriver usually has a burr or a dent on the sealing land, and that has to be dressed flat before any gasket will hold.
Q: How long do these last in normal service?
The gasket usually outlives the parts around it, so most are replaced because something else was opened rather than because they failed. Treat one as a consumable to be renewed whenever the joint is broken.
Q: Do I need gasket sealant as well?
Normally no. These gaskets are designed to seal dry against clean, flat machined faces, and a heavy bead of sealant can hold the joint apart or squeeze inside and break off into the pump. A thin film to hold the gasket in place during assembly is as far as most fitters go.
