Two things end an impeller. Abrasive wear rounds off the vane tips and opens the clearance to the casing, so more and more liquid recirculates instead of leaving through the discharge. Cavitation does something different and uglier, collapsing vapour bubbles against the vane surface until the metal looks pitted and eaten away. Both show up as falling flow and a pump that has to run longer for the same result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I fit a larger diameter to get more pressure?
Only within what the pump and motor were designed for. A bigger impeller draws more power and can overload the motor, raise the axial thrust on the bearings and push the casing past its rating. Stay with the diameter the pump was built around unless Burks lists the larger one for your exact model.
Q: What else is worth changing while the wet end is open?
The casing gasket or O-ring, because it is already disturbed, and the mechanical seal if the pump has any hours on it. The impeller lock screw and washer are cheap and awkward to reach a second time, so most rebuilders replace those at the same time.
Q: Is a worn impeller worth repairing rather than replacing?
On very large pumps with long lead times, weld build-up and re-machining is sometimes done. At this size it rarely pays. Vane profile and balance both have to be restored properly, and the labour costs more than a new part.
Q: The pump is noisy and vibrates. Could this be the cause?
It can be, especially if a vane has broken or worn unevenly. Before condemning it, rule out a partly blocked suction line, a starved inlet causing cavitation, and worn motor bearings, because all three sound similar from outside the pump.
