Burks 9630-C Adapter - Pump Replacement Part
The Burks 9630-C is a replacement adapter. Everything about how the pump runs - seal life, impeller clearance, vibration - depends on the alignment this casting holds.
The usual reason for change is corrosion around the seal chamber after a long-running leak. Liquid that has been weeping past the mechanical seal sits in the adapter and eats into the casting, and once the seal bore is pitted the new seal has nothing clean to seat against. Damaged register faces and stripped threads account for most of the rest.
Check the register and the seal bore on the new casting before assembly, and clean the motor face properly. This adapter is the Burks original, and the whole point of it is to hold alignment - which it can only do against clean, undamaged faces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can a pitted seal bore be sleeved instead of replaced?
It is done, but it needs accurate machining to keep the bore concentric with the motor register. Unless the adapter is hard to obtain, a new casting is usually quicker and removes the alignment risk entirely.
Q: What should I check before bolting it up?
Clean both register faces back to bare metal, check the motor shaft for a groove where the old seal ran, and make sure no gasket debris is trapped on the mating surfaces. A thousandth of grit on a register is enough to throw the alignment out.
Q: Does the adapter affect impeller clearance?
It does. The adapter sets the axial position of the casing relative to the motor shaft, so the front clearance at the impeller depends partly on it. That is why gasket thickness at this joint is not something to improvise.
Q: Can I fit this pump to a motor from another manufacturer?
Only if the frame designation and shaft extension match exactly. JM and JP frames are standardised for pump duty, but verify the shaft length and diameter before ordering, since a close match is not the same as the right one.
