Burks 23910 Cast Iron Casing Assembly for GA6-1-1/2
This is the cast iron casing assembly Burks supplies as part 23910, for GA6-1-1/2 pumps. It carries the suction and discharge connections, contains the pressure, and forms the volute that converts impeller velocity into head.
Casings are replaced for three reasons. Erosion wears the volute and the wear ring seat until the clearance around the impeller opens and performance drops off. Corrosion thins the casting from the inside, which is invisible until a weep appears. And freezing or a dropped pump cracks it outright, which at least announces itself.
Casings are model specific. The same Burks family covers several port sizes and duty points on different castings, so the model designation on the nameplate is what identifies the right one - this casting is listed for GA6-1-1/2. Check the suction and discharge connections against your pipework before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How can I tell whether the volute is worn rather than the impeller?
Look for a polished or grooved band in the passage opposite the impeller tips and measure the clearance at several points around the circumference. Even wear that has opened the gap all the way round points at the casing rather than at a damaged impeller.
Q: Can the pump be run with the old studs and nuts?
Only if they are sound. Stretched studs, damaged threads and corroded nuts all give uneven clamping, which is the usual reason a new gasket weeps on a joint that was otherwise fine.
Q: Can a cracked casing be welded instead?
Cast iron can be welded, but it needs preheat, the right rod and controlled cooling, and the result is a repaired pressure boundary with residual stress in it. On a pump this size the economics rarely favour it over a new casting.
Q: What should I fit at the same time?
The casing gasket or O-ring is compulsory, since the joint has to be opened. The wear ring, the impeller and the shaft seal are all worth assessing while everything is apart, because reaching them again means repeating the whole strip-down.
