Burks 21157-A Bronze Diffuser 5-1/2 in ID for 10WA6
The Burks 21157-A is a replacement diffuser in bronze measuring 5-1/2 in inside diameter, for Burks 10WA6 self-priming centrifugal pumps. Along with the impeller it forms the working core of the pump, and the clearance between the two is what decides how much of the impeller work actually reaches the discharge.
A worn diffuser shows up as a pump that no longer makes its rated head. The passages lose their sharp entry edges, the gap at the impeller tips grows, and recirculation eats into the output. Because the impeller and diffuser wear together in the same liquid, they are normally replaced as a pair.
Material matters alongside size. Bronze is what Burks specified for this version, chosen where corrosion resistance matters more than cost, and the bore is 5-1/2 in inside diameter. Both need to match before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does a worn diffuser affect priming?
A self-priming pump clears its suction line by recirculating liquid to carry air out, and that recirculation depends on the same internal clearances that make pressure. Once they open up, the pump can still move water but struggles to shift air.
Q: Can the passages be cleaned up rather than replaced?
Removing scale and deposits is worth doing and sometimes recovers useful performance. Grinding out erosion damage is not, because the passage profile is what converts velocity into pressure and reshaping it by hand does more harm than good.
Q: Is the diffuser handed or can it go in either way round?
It has a definite orientation, set by the passage direction and the fastener positions. Note how the old one sits before it comes out, and follow the Burks service instructions when refitting.
Q: Should the impeller be replaced at the same time?
In most cases yes. The two wear together in the same liquid and it is the gap between them that makes the pressure, so a new diffuser running against a worn impeller gives back only part of the lost duty.
