Burks 09812F Motor 3 HP, 3500 RPM, 208-230/460 V, Three Phase ODP
The Burks 09812F is the genuine Burks replacement motor: 3 HP, 3500 RPM, 208-230/460 V, three phase, ODP. On a close coupled Burks pump the motor is not a bolt-on accessory - the impeller mounts directly on its shaft extension, so the motor supplies the shaft, the bearings and the drive in one unit.
Open drip proof motors handle falling liquid and airborne dust, but they are not sealed. In a wet, salt-laden or washdown environment their life is much shorter than in a dry plant room, and repeated failures in that setting point at the enclosure rating rather than at the individual motor.
Fit the new motor with a new mechanical seal and slinger. The shaft on the replacement is unworn, the old seal has bedded to a different surface, and it costs very little to remove the most common cause of a motor failing twice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can it be wired for either voltage?
A dual voltage motor can, following the connection diagram on its own nameplate or terminal box lid. Electrical work like this belongs to a qualified electrician and has to meet the wiring regulations that apply where the pump is installed.
Q: Why did the original motor fail?
In pump service the usual answers are liquid reaching the bearings past a failed shaft seal, prolonged running at low flow, or frequent starting against a closed valve. Fitting a new motor without addressing the cause tends to produce a second failure.
Q: Which way should it rotate?
Check the direction arrow on the pump and confirm it on a brief run before coupling under load. A three phase motor running backwards after rewiring will still move some liquid, which makes the fault easy to miss and easy to blame on the pump.
Q: What does open drip proof mean in practice?
The enclosure keeps out liquid and solids falling from directly above while letting cooling air pass through. It is the right choice indoors or under cover, and the wrong one for a washdown area or an exposed deck, where a totally enclosed motor belongs.
