Burks 04236 Brass Pipe Plug 1/4-18 NPT for WA6, G6, G9 and GA series
This is the 1/4-18 NPT hex head brass pipe plug Burks lists as part 04236. It closes the tapped service ports in the casing and adapter - the priming port, the vent and the drain - and it seals on a tapered thread rather than against a face.
Plugs corrode into their threads and then get destroyed on removal. Once the hex is rounded or the plug has snapped off flush, what was a two minute job becomes drilling and re-tapping a casting you would rather not damage. Fitting new plugs at a rebuild, with the right compound on the threads, avoids that entirely.
Use the right sealant and do not over-tighten. A tapered thread wedges, so a plug driven in hard can crack a cast boss. A compatible thread sealant on a clean thread and firm tightening is enough, and it makes the plug come out again next time.

Q: Do I need thread sealant?
Yes, on a tapered thread in a pump port. Use a sealant compatible with the liquid being pumped, keep it back from the first thread so none enters the pump, and clean the female thread before fitting.
Q: How tight should it go?
Firm, not brutal. A tapered thread wedges as it tightens and an over-driven plug can split a cast boss. If it still weeps once the pump is under pressure, back it out, clean and re-seal rather than simply pulling harder.
