The Berkeley S14022 is the genuine set of six soft packing rings for B-Series centrifugal pumps built with a packed stuffing box rather than a mechanical seal, sized at 1-1/8 in. inside diameter by 1/4 in. cross section. The rings stack in the stuffing box around the shaft and are compressed by the gland follower until they conform to both the shaft and the bore. What they create is not a hard seal but a controlled restriction: a deliberately imperfect barrier that holds back most of the pressure while allowing a trickle through.
That distinction catches people out. A packed box is supposed to drip, and a slow steady drip is the sign of a correctly adjusted one. That small leakage is what lubricates and cools the packing where it rubs against the turning shaft. Wind the gland down until the dripping stops and the packing runs dry within minutes, glazes, hardens and then scores the shaft or the shaft sleeve - damage that turns a simple repacking job into a machining job. Leave it too slack, on the other hand, and you waste water, soak the bearing end of the pump, and on a suction lift you may draw air in through the box and upset the prime.
Repacking properly is mostly patience. Get every old ring out, including the stubborn bottom one, which is worth buying a packing hook for. Clean the bore and inspect the shaft or sleeve for grooving before anything new goes in. Fit the rings one at a time, turning each so its joint sits roughly ninety degrees round from the one below, and seat each ring fully before adding the next. Nip the gland up only finger tight to start with, then run the pump and adjust in small steps, letting things settle between each one. Check it again after the first hour and once more later in the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I fit packing to a pump that was built with a mechanical seal?
No. The two arrangements use different housings, different gland hardware and often a different shaft or sleeve, so they are not interchangeable without changing parts. Establish which way your pump was built before ordering.
Q: Can I just push one new ring in on top of the old ones?
It is a common shortcut and it rarely works for long. The old rings underneath have hardened and lost their ability to conform, so the single new ring carries all the gland load, wears quickly, and you are back at the same job within weeks. Replace the whole set.
Q: Does the shaft need attention when I repack?
Yes. Run a fingernail along the area the packing runs on. Any groove you can feel will chew through new packing quickly and prevent a proper seal, so a worn shaft or sleeve should be repaired or replaced while the pump is already apart.
Q: How many rings does my stuffing box take?
Count what comes out, because the number varies with the box depth and whether a lantern ring is fitted part way down the stack. If a lantern ring is present it must go back in the same position, since it feeds flush water to the rings above and below it.
