Berkeley S13270 Ball Bearing - Single Row, 30 mm Bore
The Berkeley S13270 is the genuine single row ball bearing used in the bearing frame of B-Series frame-mounted centrifugal pumps, with a 30 mm bore and the AFBMA designation 30BC02. In a frame-mounted pump the shaft runs on its own bearings inside the frame rather than relying on the motor bearings, which is what allows the pump to be belt driven, coupled to an engine, or matched to a driver of your choosing. Those bearings carry every load the pump generates and every load the drive imposes on it.
That is a harder life than it sounds. A belt drive pulls the shaft sideways with whatever tension the installer put on it, and that side load never lets up. The impeller generates hydraulic thrust along the shaft that changes with the operating point, so a pump throttled well away from its design duty loads its bearings differently than the designer intended. Add continuous running hours, heat soaking in from the driver, and vibration from a worn or unbalanced impeller, and bearings become one of the parts most likely to decide when a pump comes out of service.
They give plenty of warning if anyone is listening. A bearing that has started to break down first changes its note, rumbling or growling or developing a whine that was not there last month. Then comes heat you cannot comfortably keep a hand on, then vibration, then visible movement at the shaft. Ignoring that sequence is expensive, because once the shaft starts deflecting the seal faces no longer run true and begin to leak, and in the worst case the impeller touches the casing. When fitting a replacement, press only on the ring you are seating, never through the balls, keep the shaft journal and housing bore spotless, and grease to the pump manufacturer instructions - over-greasing generates heat just as surely as running short.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I heat the bearing to fit it onto the shaft?
Controlled heating in an induction heater or a clean oil bath is the standard professional method and makes the fit straightforward. Never use an open flame, never take a bearing past the temperature its maker allows, and be aware that sealed and pre-greased bearings have a much lower limit than open ones.
Q: Does the same bearing go in both ends of the frame?
Not necessarily. Many bearing frames use a different size or arrangement at the drive end and the impeller end, so check each position against your pump parts list before ordering a pair rather than assuming they match.
Q: How often should pump bearings be changed?
There is no useful calendar interval, because life depends on running hours, load, temperature and how much dirt and water get in. Condition tells you far more than time does, so listen and feel at every service and act on any change in noise, heat or vibration.
Q: Can I just pump in more grease to quieten a noisy bearing?
It may go quiet for a short while, but noise means the rolling surfaces are already damaged and grease cannot rebuild a pitted race. You also risk packing the housing so full that churning raises the temperature and accelerates the failure you are trying to postpone.
Not sure this is the right part? Send us a Picture of the pump plate on your pump and the CLR Marine team will confirm the correct bearing before you order.
