Berkeley S12260 Water Slinger - 1-3/32 in. ID Rubber
The Berkeley S12260 is the genuine rubber water slinger fitted to B-Series frame-mounted centrifugal pumps, measuring 1-3/32 in. inside diameter by 1-3/4 in. outside diameter. It is nothing more than a flexible ring stretched onto the shaft in the open gap between the back of the wet end and the bearing frame, and it does its job through physics alone. Any water that works its way past the shaft seal and starts creeping along the shaft toward the bearings reaches the slinger, which is turning with the shaft, and centrifugal force flings it outward to drip away harmlessly.
That makes it the cheapest component in the pump standing guard over one of the most expensive assemblies in it. Water and bearing grease are not compatible in any quantity. Even a slight, continuous ingress emulsifies the grease, strips the load-carrying film from the rolling elements and etches the races. The sequence is always the same: a faint rumble that turns into a whine, then heat you cannot keep your hand on, then a seized shaft. By that point you are usually replacing bearings, the shaft seal and quite possibly the shaft itself, all because a ring of rubber was missing.
Slingers get forgotten because they are trivial to fit and easy to leave off. They also perish quietly, going hard and glazed with age and heat, splitting at the bore, or being softened by any oil that finds them. Check it every time the pump is apart. A good one is supple and grips the shaft tightly enough that it cannot be spun by hand; if it turns on the shaft while the shaft stays still, it is not slinging anything and should be replaced. The 1-3/32 in. bore is deliberately undersized so that it grips by stretch, which is why a loose, approximately sized substitute tends to walk along the shaft and end up doing nothing at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where exactly should it sit along the shaft?
In the open span between the back of the wet end and the bearing housing, positioned so that whatever it throws off lands clear of the housing opening and can drain away. Too close to the housing and you are simply redirecting water at the thing you are trying to protect.
Q: Do I have to pull the shaft out to fit one?
Normally not. It stretches over the end of the shaft and rolls down into position, so it can usually be fitted while the pump is already apart for other work without disturbing the rotating assembly or the bearings.
Q: My bearings are running hot - will a new slinger cure that?
Not on its own. Heat means the bearings are already damaged, over-greased or out of alignment, and all three need investigating. Fit a fresh slinger while you are in there so the same cause does not come back, but treat it as prevention rather than a cure.
Q: Can I leave it out if my pump has never leaked?
It is a poor gamble. Mechanical seals weep a little as they wear and packed boxes drip by design, so the slinger is there for the day sealing starts to let go - which is often well before anything is visible from outside the pump.
