Berkeley M13907 Diffuser for Engine-Driven Pump
The Berkeley M13907 is the genuine replacement diffuser for Berkeley engine-driven centrifugal pumps. The diffuser is the stationary component that surrounds the impeller and receives the water thrown off it. Water leaves an impeller at high velocity but low pressure; the gradually expanding passages of the diffuser slow that flow down in a controlled way and convert its velocity energy into the pressure you actually measure at the discharge. It is the part of the pump that turns engine horsepower into head.
It also does a second, quieter job: it sets the running clearance around the impeller. That clearance is what stops water that has already been pressurised from slipping straight back to the suction side. As silt, sand and grit in raw water erode the diffuser passages and open that gap up, more and more of each impeller revolution is wasted recirculating the same water. The pump sounds normal and the engine works just as hard, but the tank fills more slowly and the pressure gauge never quite reaches where it used to. That gradual, hard-to-pin-down loss of performance is the classic symptom of a worn diffuser.
Because engine-driven pumps are usually portable units that get moved, dropped and fed whatever water is nearest, they wear diffusers faster than a fixed installation does. The sensible time to change one is whenever the wet end is already open for a shaft seal or impeller job, since almost all of the labour is the same. Inspect the vane tips and the sealing face while it is out: rounded or thinned edges, grooving and hairline cracks all mean replacement. Fit a fresh body seal at the same time so the pump goes back together leak-free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I run the pump with the old diffuser left out?
It will turn and move some water, but output collapses and the impeller loses the reference that keeps it from contacting the surrounding casing. A few hours of that can cost you an impeller and a casing, which is a far more expensive repair than the part you were trying to avoid buying.
Q: Will a new diffuser fix a pump that will not hold prime?
Usually not on its own. Losing prime points to air getting in on the suction side, so start with the suction hose, its fittings, the foot valve, the body seal and the shaft seal. A worn diffuser costs you pressure once the pump is primed rather than stopping it priming.
Q: Do I need special tools to change it?
No. A standard socket set and a soft-faced mallet cover it on most units. Take your time freeing the mating faces and use a plastic or wooden wedge rather than a screwdriver, because a gouged sealing face will leak no matter how good the new parts are.
Q: How do I tell whether mine is worn out or just dirty?
Wash it off and look at the vane edges and the face that runs closest to the impeller. Scale or mineral deposit that scrubs away is only fouling. Edges that have gone thin and rounded, grooves worn into the face, or any crack means the part has reached the end of its service life.
