AMT 4903-010-09 Bronze Impeller, 1.5 HP
The AMT 4903-010-09 is the genuine bronze impeller for AMT’s 1.5 HP three-phase pump build. Bronze has been the material of choice for seawater pump impellers for as long as there have been seawater pumps, and it is specified here for properties no other common impeller material combines.
It resists salt water corrosion extremely well, which is the obvious part. Less obvious is that bronze is naturally inhospitable to marine growth, so fouling establishes itself more slowly inside the pump than it would on a stainless or coated impeller. And because bronze is relatively soft, it wears gracefully against an adjacent surface rather than galling or seizing if clearances close up — which on a pump that occasionally passes a solid or briefly rubs is a genuinely valuable property.
The trade-off is that bronze vane edges round off faster than stainless under abrasive flow, and a rounded leading edge costs head quietly. Watch for thinned or ragged vane tips, a worn or perforated shroud, erosion at the eye opening up the running clearance, and the pitted honeycomb texture cavitation leaves on the vane backs. At 1.5 HP balance matters too — an impeller that has lost material unevenly puts that imbalance through the seal and bearings every revolution.
