On a self-priming pump these unglamorous parts carry more weight than they do on a flooded-suction machine. A self-priming pump depends on holding a charge of liquid in its casing between runs, and on keeping its suction line airtight while it evacuates air on start-up. A static seal that has hardened and shrunk will not drip enough to notice on the floor, but it will let air in and liquid drain back — and the pump that took ten seconds to prime last year now takes two minutes, or never gets there at all.
Everything in the kit is Viton, the fluoroelastomer specified for solvents, fuels, oils, acids and elevated temperatures.
