AMT 2105-011-00 Stainless Steel 56J Stub Shaft
The AMT 2105-011-00 is the genuine stainless steel stub shaft for pumps built on NEMA 56J frame motors. A stub shaft is a short extension shaft that couples to the motor shaft at one end and carries the impeller at the other — the arrangement that lets a pump end be built around a standard motor without the motor manufacturer having to supply a special shaft.
What makes the stub shaft worth paying attention to is that it takes all the abuse the motor shaft is protected from. It runs through the mechanical seal, so it is permanently wetted; it carries the impeller, so it takes the full axial thrust and bending load; and if anything goes wrong — a dry run, a seal failure, a solid jamming the impeller — the damage lands here rather than on the motor. That is the design intent: a stub shaft is far cheaper to replace than a motor.
Replace it when the seal running surface is grooved or scored, when the impeller register or keyway is fretted, when there is visible corrosion pitting, or when the shaft has been bent or twisted by a jammed impeller. Stainless steel is specified for corrosion resistance in the wetted seal area. Fit a new mechanical seal at the same time — a new seal on a scored shaft will leak almost immediately.
