AMT 1652-006-00 Type 9A Seat Drive Pin, 316 Stainless Steel
The AMT 1652-006-00 is the genuine Type 9A seat drive pin, machined from 316 stainless steel. It is a tiny part with a job out of all proportion to its size: it engages a slot in the mechanical seal’s stationary seat and stops that seat rotating in its housing while the shaft spins against it.
If the pin is missing, sheared or corroded away, the seat is free to creep. Once it starts turning with the shaft it grinds its own elastomer cup to pieces, the face pair loses the flatness it was lapped to, and the seal begins to weep — usually within hours rather than weeks, and often on a pump that has just been rebuilt with an expensive new seal. It is a classic and infuriating failure, because everything else in the job was done correctly.
316 stainless is specified because the pin sits permanently wetted in the seal cavity, where a plain steel pin would rust away and a lesser stainless would pit in chloride service. Always inspect the pin whenever you change a seal, and fit a new one if there is any doubt — it costs very little compared to a repeat teardown. This pin is listed for AMT’s 1-1/2" self-priming centrifugal pumps including models 3890, 389A, 3891, 3892, 3893 and 3894.
